How do you actually learn energy fighting in War Thunder?

Every time I try to turn fight someone, I either lose all my speed or end up in a position where they can just shoot me.

People keep saying "manage your energy" like that explains everything.

What should I actually be paying attention to during a fight? Speed? Altitude? Both? I'm mainly flying fighters and still figuring things out.

Both. Speed and altitude give you options, but how you should use them depends on the aircraft.

Stop following every enemy into a turn. Sometimes the correct move is to disengage and reset.

My favorite maneuver is accidentally stalling directly in front of the enemy. Very advanced technique.

lmao same. But seriously, learn your plane's strengths. A good turn fighter and an aircraft built for high-speed passes shouldn't be flown the same way.

Any recommendations for practicing without getting immediately deleted?

Try learning the flight characteristics in lower-pressure modes or practice sessions. Focus on one skill at a time rather than trying to master every maneuver in one match.
